T eki-juku School is now in the middle of skyscrapers in Kitahama. It was a private school for Dutch learning founded by a Dutch scholar, Koan Ogata. Each student was given the same: one Tatami mat of space. Many leaders who modernized Japan, such as Yukichi Fukuzawa and Masujiro Omura, attended this school from the end of the Edo Period to the beginning of Meiji. The marks cut or carved by Katana swords on the pillars on the second floor show how fervent and enthusiastic those young students felt about the future of Japan under the turbulent social circumstances.
