After Toyotomi Hideyoshi defeated Shibata Katsuie at the battle of Shizugatake in present-day Shiga Prefecture, he built Osaka Castle on the site on which the Ishiyama Honganji Temple had once stood. The donjon was burned during the Summer Campaign (Osaka Natsu- no-jin) and although it was rebuilt and put under the direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate, it was destroyed again by lightning, and again after the Battle of Fushimi, this time possibly due to arson. The present-day donjon was rebuilt in 1934 with donations from the citizens of Osaka. Its design follows that of the donjon on the folding screen depicting the Summer Campaign which is kept in the Castle Museum.
