Situated south of the pond Sarusawa-no-ike, Naramachi is the quarter of Nara City which centers on the temple Gankoji. This block has a grid of streets which are lined by merchant houses. The quarter developed under the autonomy of the merchants who lived there during the medieval age and the streets are preserved as they appeared at that time.
The quarter contains the Naramachi museum of archaelogy, "Time" museum, and the Nara Orient Museum in the quarter.
