The Yakushiji Temple was first erected in the Asuka region by Emperor Temmu in an attempt to bring about the recovery of his ailing consort (who later became Empress Jito) and later moved to its present location. Only the East Pagoda, which looks as if it had six stories because it has three decorative roofs placed between its real ones, escaped the many calamities that damaged the other structures in the temple.
