Omizutori is a central rite of "Shunie" held in February at the Nigatsudo (Second Month Hall) of the Todaiji Temple.
The event, dating back to 1200 years ago, is a Buddhist mass which expresses apologies to the 11-faced Kannon statue. The event continues for 14 days from March 1 with its climax at the splendid torch waving rite, Kagotaimatsu, held on March 12. This rite is said to symbolize the arrival of spring in Nara.
