Nara City
Nara Period Area

Heijokyo was the capital created by Empress Gemmei in 710. It had an area of 8.9 km east-west by 4.8 km south-north, and was constructed in imitation of the Tang dynasty's capital at Chang'an. The city served as the seat of government for seven successive rulers for 74 years.
The Heijokyu museum located on the site exhibits many excavated articles and a replica of the ancient capital in its heyday.
