Oyamazaki-cho
Warring Period to Edo Period Area
Castle / Hideyoshi Toyotomi
This is a mountain facing the Otokoyama (literally "Man's Mountain") across the Yodo River. Commanding the routes out of the Kyoto basin, this was a strategically important mountain in military terms and also for transport. In the past Mount Tenno was often the scene of battles, and it is particularly famous for the Battle of Yamazaki in 1582, when Hashiba Hideyoshi (later Toyotomi Hideyoshi) defeated Akechi Mitsuhide.
Since the capture of Mount Tenno was the decisive factor in determining the outcome of the battle, the turning point between success and failure is often referred to in popular speech as "Tennozan". Many old temples and shrines, such as the Hoshakuji and Dainenji Temples, and the Sakatoke Shrine, are to be found on Mount Tenno. At the bottom there is also a tea-ceremony house, Taian, which is said to have been built by the master of the tea ceremony, Sen-no Rikyu.
