Uji City
Heian Period to Muromachi Period Area
Murasaki Shikibu
The Seta River which flows from Lake Biwa changes its name to the Uji River as it enters the city of Kyoto, where it then meets the Kizu River and the Katsura River to become the Yodo River. During the Heian Period (794-1192), this area thrived as a villa town for the aristocracy.
Along the Uji River are various places noted in connection with the last 10 chapters, or Uji-jujo, of the Tale of Genji, a masterpiece of Japanese literature written by the court lady Murasaki Shikibu.
