Uji City
Heian Period to Muromachi Period Area
Temple
Originally built as a villa for the Fujiwara Family in Uji, a suburb of Kyoto. Fujiwara Yorimichi converted it into a temple with Dainichi Nyorai as its principle deity. The Amidado hall looks like the "ho-o" - a mythological bird of Chinese origin - which resembles a phoenix landing with wings spread, and since both ends of the roof are decorated with images of phoenix-like birds the building is also called the Ho-o-do, or Phoenix Hall.
The garden in the temple which borrows the Uji River and nearby mountains as background scenery for its design is designated a spot of historic interest.
