Jakkoin Temple
<-(353K)

At this temple, the Empress Dowager Kenrei-mon-in, daughter of Taira no Kiyomori (1118-1181), and a leading character in the Heike Monogatari (historic romance of the Taira Family, war chronicle), spent the rest of her life after the Taira were destroyed. The temple is said to originate from a nunnery built by Prince Shotoku in order to pray for the repose of the soul of Emperor Yomei in the 6th century. The main hall was reconstructed by Katagiri Katsumoto at the order of Yodogimi, concubine of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the ruler at the time, from the 16th-17th centuries. Its principal image Jizo bodhisattva is designated an important cultural property.
