Tenryuji Temple <-(307K)
|
The headquarters of the Tenryuji school of the Rinzai branch of the Zen sect. In the 14th century, the temple was founded by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji in memory of Emperor Godaigo. Though the temple was ravaged by fires and warfare, it was restored with the support of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Later it was almost destroyed by the civil war which occurred around the end of the Edo Period (1600-1868). Most of the extant buildings are restorations constructed during the Meiji Era (1868-1912). West of the Hojo (superior's quarter), there is a famous landscape garden with a pond in the go-round style designed by the noted priest Muso Kokushi. |
