This is the name given to the town originally built around the Inner Shrine. The Sangu- kaido - the road leading from Ujibashi Bridge in the Inner Shrine along Isuzugawa River - was a scene of color and bustle during the Edo Period when pilgrims used to visit Ise to give thanks to the gods in a pilgrimage known as "Okage- mairi." Today this road is lined with souvenir shops and restaurants. In 1993, to coincide with the 61st Shiknen Sengu or shrine rebuilding ceremony, the scenery was improved in a number of ways - shopfronts were all given a facelift to blend in with the surroundings, electric cables were relaid underground, and the sotne pavement was restored. Okage- yokocho, or Okage Lane, was also rebuilt in one part to recreate the atmosphere of the Old Road to Ise.
