This route is said to be Japan's oldest recorded road. The route was opened as an official road at the time the capital was constructed in Nara. It stretches approximately 34 km from Nara City through Tenri City to Kanaya in Sakurai City. Along or near the route are the Isonokami Shrine, Chogaku-ji Temple, Genpin-an, Sujin Mausoleum, Keiko Mausoleum, Hashihaka Mound, Omiwa Shrine, Hibara Shrine and other spots of historical interest. |
