Omiwa Shrine <-(274K)
|
One of the oldest shrines in Japan, venerating Mt. Miwa as the object of worship. It does not have a main sanctuary like ordinary shrines. As with the Hibara Shrine, it has three "torii", or Shinto archways and an oratory with a gable roof thatched with layers of cypress bark (all these are designated important cultural properties). It is still populary worshiped as the god of "sake" (alcoholic drinks) and medicines. Balls of cedar leaves which are used as a symbol of sake dealers throughout Japan are made of Japanese cedar leaves which are collected from Mt. Miwa at this shrine. |
