Asukadera Temple
<-(266K)

at Asuka Town, Nara Pref.

Japan's first fully-fledged temple complex erected in the 6th century on the initiative of Soga no Umako, head of the powerful Soga Family. Excavation work uncovered a large-scale Buddhist cathedral. At present, the Angoin which was built in the Edo Period (1600-1868) inherits the name Asukadera. The Asuka Daibutsu to which the temple is dedicated is Japan's oldest molten Buddhist image but due to repeated rennovations, it incorporates only a few original fragments.
