Yoshino-cho
Yoshino Shrine

Modern Times
Designated Historical Spot Yoshinoyama-Jorokudaira, North Gate Facing North (Direction of Kyoto)

The Yoshino Shrine was erected in 1889 to the memory of Emperor Go-Daigo by Emperor Meiji (1852-1912). The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Go-Daigo and annexed subordinate shrines enshrine seven retainers, including Hino Suketomo, who rendered distinguished services to the emperor. The main building of the shrine, which was renovated in 1932, is a fine piece of architecture, all made of hinoki cypress.
The fact that the main hall faces north, or in the direction of Kyoto, is believed to reflect the emperor's nostalgic sentiment. From the shrine's compound, visitors command a fine panoramic view of Mt. Katuragi and Mt. Kongo.
