Yoshino-cho
Hermitage of Poet Saigyo and Spring Kokeshimizu

Heian Period
Matsuo Basho, Poet-monk Saigyo

The wandering poet-monk Saigyo (1118-90) lived in seclusion in this small hut for some while. He is well known as an itinerant monk who composed many fine waka poems (poems written in 5-7-5-7-7 syllabic form). Near the old hermitage is a clean spring which was used as a motif of these poems. Another foremost poet in Japan, Matsuo Basho (1644-94) also visited this spot and composed a haiku poem (poem written in 5-7-5 syllabic form) on the theme of the spring.
