Emperor Go-Daigo's Tomb
-- Tonoo no Misasagi

Period of the Northern and Southern Courts
Emperor Go-Daigo (the 96th Emperor)

This is the mausoleum of Emperor Go-Daigo and located in the hill at the back of Nyoirin-ji Temple. The mausoleum is beautifully surrounded by refreshing evergreen trees.
The shape of the mound is round (empun). Oriented north or toward then-capital Kyoto, it seems to symbolize the emperor's mortification.
