Yoshino-cho
Katte Shrine

Heian Period
Shizuka Gozen

Mt. Furisode behind the Katte Shrine is associated with the legend that a heavenly maiden appeared and danced before Prince Oama (?-686) when he was playing the koto, or Japanese harp, in front of the shrine.
The present shrine building is a reconstruction made in 1776. Its compound is said to be the place in which Shizuka Gozen, the mistress of Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159-89, Japan's foremost tragic hero, younger brother of Minamoto no Yoritomo), performed a dance at the request of those who arrested her after her farewell to her lover Yoshitsune.
