Yoshino-cho
Kimpu Shrine

Heian Period
Kanayamahiko-no-mikoto, Fujiwara no Michinaga

The Kimpu Shrine lies in the Oku-no-sembon district, deep in a luxuriant forest of cedar and cherry trees. It is dedicated to the guardian god of Mt. Yoshino, Kanayamahiko-no-mikoto. According to Eigamonogatari, a historical tale of the 11th century, Fujiwara no Michinaga (966-1028, powerful statesman of the Heian Period) prayed here at the mecca for mountaineering asceticism and his sutra holder is extant.
It is now deposited as a national treasure in the care of the Kyoto National Museum.
