Designated Important Cultural Property
Edo Period
Village Headman
| The Isa family's house is situated in Kozuya, Yawata City, near the Nagare Bridge. It is a typical village headman's residence in the southern Yamashiro area, built during the middle of the Edo Period (1600-1868). It is designated as a national important cultural property.
The Kozuya village consisted of three districts: Sato, Hama and Higashimukai. Members of the Isa family, in Hama, often acted as the village headmen.
The Isa family's main building is roofed with thatch whose thickness at the ends of the eaves is an impressive 1m or more. The supporting pillars and girders are solid and massive. There are big kitchen ranges in the earth-floored area and various warehouses stretching north and south of the main building. The premises are surrounded by a moat, which allows access to the premises by boat from the Kizu River.
