The Interior of the Sugiyama Family's Old House

The room with a large alcove

The house's interior is maintained in good condition, conveying the cultural atmosphere of the Edo Period. A particular reminder of the family's past prosperous days is the room with a large alcove. The painting of an old pine tree on the wall of the alcove and the paintings on the sliding doors are the works of artists of the Kano School.
Today, the house is under the control of the municipal government. In the Jinaimachi district, it is the only historic house the interior of which is open to the public. Across the road is the Jinaimachi Center in which old documents and historical materials regarding the district are on display.
