mushikomado (This is the relatively old style of mushikomado.)
Edo Period, Modern Times
| The town houses in the Jinaimachi district of Tondabayashi have unique details.
The garret called tsushi has small windows called mushikomado designed for admitting light and ventilation. In the 18th century, the shape of the window was that of a hydrangea but gradually it became flatter and finally rectangular in the Meiji Period (1869-1912). Other attractive features conveying the atmosphere of 18th-century style town houses are mochiokuri (members supporting the pent roofs), ridge-end tiles at the edges of the roof and latticework facing the street.
