Tatsuno City
Shuentei Villa

Important Cultural Property Designated by the Tatsuno Municipal Government
Edo Period

This place was named "Shuentei" because a beautiful view can be seen from the front garden. A framed picture of this view is hung on the wall of the tea-ceremony house which was erected at the end of the Edo Period (1600-1868). The tea-house is in the sukiya tea-house style with some shoin style influences. The tea-house looks as if it were floating on a pond. The pond is called shinji-ike, meaning a pond in the shape of the Chinese character for "heart." The tea-house well matches the gardens, the pond and the cedar hedges.
In the northeast of the villa stands a summer resort house for the lord of the clan, which was built in the late 18th century and is said to have been renovated several times. The guest room and living room have a characteristic design and structure with an atmosphere of elegance in simplicity. And the existence of a secret passage under the floor tells something of the political circumstances of the times.
By the pond, there are monuments engraved with the poems of Miki Rofu, a famous poet from Tatsuno, and Ihara Saikaku, another famous poet and novelist of the Edo Period.
