Kumobe-Kuruma-zuka Tomb Mound

Pre-Kofun Age
Keyhole-Shaped Tomb Mound

The Kumobe-Kuruma-zuka tomb mound is the second biggest keyhole-shaped tomb mound in Hyogo Prefecture. This was named "Kuruma" (car) because it has a small tomb on either side and it looks as if it has wheels like a car.
This tomb mound is assumed to have been constructed early in the middle of the Kofun Age (ca. 300 - 720). The tomb mound, which is 140m long and has a moat around it and a small tomb on either side, was for an emperor. It shows that, in Tamba as a junction which links the San-in region to the Kansai region, there was a great power and influence which was directly related to the Central Government.
