Sasayama-cho
Remains of Yakami Castle

Warring Period
Mountain Castle

There is a beautiful mountain named "Takashiro," which is also called "Tamba Fuji," in the middle of the Sasayama Basin. The Yakami Castle which was constructed by a lord of a manor, Hatano, in the late Muromachi Period is on Mt. Takashiro. The Hatano family lived in the castle and had an influence all over the Tamba area. However, in 1579, during the reign of Hatano Hideharu, it was destroyed by Akechi Mitsuhide who was sent by Oda Nobunaga (1532-84), the prime mover of Japan's reunification, to take the castle. (Akechi Mitsuhide was Nobunaga's deputy and led the assassin of Nobunaga.)
The site of Yakami Castle which is the biggest old battlefield in Tamba is also remarkable as an exemplary defensive structure of the Warring Period (1467-1568).
This historical place attracts people even now.
