First constructed in 1557, Nanshu-ji is a temple of the Daitokuji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism was totally destroyed by fire in 1615 during the summer campaign in the sieges of Osaka Castle (Osaka natsu no jin - civil war), but was reconstructed by Priest Takuan in 1617. Sen No Rikyu (1522-1591) and Takeno Joo, both masters of the tea ceremony, are said to have trained themselves at this temple. The tea house called "Jissoan" and Rikyu's favorite washbasin for the tea ceremony still remain in the compound. Its dry garden was designated as a national scenic spot in 1983.
