Sakurai Shrine's Worship Hall

National Treasure
Kamakura Period

Sakurai Shrine has a long history dating back to early-10th-century . Except for the worship and main halls, almost all the shrine buildings were destroyed by fire when Oda Nobunaga (1534-82), the supreme dominator attacked neighboring Negoro Temple.
The worship hall is divided into two rooms by an earth-floored through passage (called a bado). Designed according to the architectural style of the Kamakura period of the 13 th Century, it was designated as a national treasure in 1917.
