Old Sakai Lighthouse

National Historic Monument
Modern Times

This wooden Western-style hexagonal lighthouse with a height of 11.3 meters was designed by an English engineer and completed in 1877. It is the oldest in Japan among lighthouses still standing in their original positions. The construction was funded by citizen donations.
The lighthouse provided guidance for mariners in Osaka Bay for almost 100 years. In 1967, however,it was closed down because of land reclamation of the coastal area. It was designated as a national historic monument in 1972.
