Before the Kofun Period
Female Head Person
| This tomb mound was found in the premises of a factory in the Taniuchi district. The tomb mound has been restored and now is known as "Joo no Oka," meaning "Hill of the Queen." The stone coffin is open to the public.
This tomb mound was built in the mid Kofun Period (the 5th century). It is a keyhole-shaped tomb mound with an overall length of approximately 32 m. An interlocking type, box-shaped stone coffin was used as a burial facility. A female corpse which was in well-preserved condition and small articles, such as mirrors, jewels, iron swords and iron axes, have been recovered from the coffin.
This is a rare case in which excavated human bones were able to be identified as being female:there have only been two other cases reported in Kumamoto and Oita Prefectures.
This tomb mound attracts attention as it is an unusual tomb of a female head person.
