![]() | This old house was designated as a spot of historic interest by the Osaka prefectural government in 1973. The master of the house, Kayano Sanpei, was a young samurai warrior who served the lord of the Ako domain, Asano Takuminokami (1665-17001). In violation of a rule, Takuminokami drew his sword against his rival Kira Kozukenosuke in Edo Castle. As punishment, the Edo shogunate authority confiscated the domain and ordered the lord to commit suicide. Kayano Sanpei returned to Ako by express palanquin to report this order. Two years later, a band of 47 loyal retainers (ronin) avenged their lord. This incident as an illustration of loyalty and heroism has always been very popular among Japanese people. Kayano Sanpei, torn between filial piety and loyalty to his lord, committed suicide on the anniversary of his lord's death, 11months before the raid of Kira's mansion by the 47 ronin. The "Nagaya-mon" gate, near which he composed a farewell poem just before his suicide, remains to this day.
