Kusatsu River (Kusatsugawa)

Edo Period
Tenjogawa

As its former name Sunagawa (sand river) implies, even today the Kusatsu River often dries up in seasons of little rainfall. Officially designated as a first-class river and with an overall length of approx. 15 kilometers, it runs through the center of Kusatsu City from east to west. As a "tenjogawa" or ceiling river, Kusatsu River has a bed higher than the roofs of ordinary private houses.
