Ashiura Kannon-ji Temple

Shiga Prefectural Historic Relics and Designated Important Cultural Assets
Azuchi Momoyama Period

This temple is said to have been originated by the regent Prince Shotoku (574-622, statesman who instituted the Seventeen-Article Constitution) and founded by Hata no Kawakatsu, a friend of the prince. The temple's restorer Kanga and successive chief abbots in the Azuchi-Momoyama Period (1568-1600), when Oda Nobunaga (1534-82) and Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) brought about the political unification of Japan, had a close connection with the authority to control Lake Biwa and its surrounding areas. In the precincts are a lot of cultural assets including the Amida hall and shoin -style architecture. (Usually not open to the public).
