Kusatsu city
Kusatsu-juku Honjin

National Historic Relics
Edo Period

Kusatsu-juku Honjin is a symbol of Kusatsu, a city that served as a post-station town from 1635 to 1870. Built in 1635, it served as one of the town's two official inns for daimyos (feudal clans), shogunate officials, imperial messengers and royal families.
Within its 4,700 square-meter premises are various relics, including the main gate, a residence with a kitchen, a bathing house and a sub-gate. It almost completely retains its Edo-Period form. After recent extensive repairs, it was opened to the public in April 1996.
