Tsukiyomi Bridge

Nara Period
Stone Monument with a Poem by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro

Where the Takenouchi Highway crosses the Asuka River there is a bridge with the elegant name, "Tsukiyomi" which means "writing a poem about the moon."
There are two old stone lanterns at the foot of the bridge, engraved with the characters for "Daijingu," the Ise Shrine, and "Kompira Daigongen," the Kompira Avatar of Buddha. The lights of these stone lanterns were dedicated to the Ise Shrine and the Kompira and they served to guide people passing by.
On the right bank 50m upstream from this bridge, there is a stone monument engraved with a poem by the famous poet, Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, from the ancient poem collection "Shin Kokin Wakashu."
