Morimoto Shrine

Asuka Period
Shrine of Engishiki, Hayatoishi (Stone Statues with a Human Body and an Animal Face)

The Morimoto Shrine, which is the guardian shrine of the Komagatani area, is one of the Myojin Taisha, the highest-ranked shrines defined by the ancient Engishiki law. Here a husband and wife god couple are worshipped.
There is a record saying that, in the Heian Period (794-1185), this shrine and the Masamune shrine, the guardian shrine of the Kawachi-Konda area (located in the premises of the current Konda Hachimangu Shrine), were visited by an imperial envoy from the Court whenever a festival took place, which shows how important these shrines were.
In front of the main building stand a couple of unique stone statues called "Hayatoishi," with a human body and an animal face.
