Gin-ya -- the Money Exchange--

Edo Period
The Money Exchange, Boat Board Fence

Furuichi once was a very lively and busy town. Many owners and boatmen of Kensakibune-boats and merchants of Kawachi cotton lived here, and many travellers stopped here. This was where two highways cross, "Takenouchi Highway," which leads to Yamato from Naniwa, and "Higashi-Koya Highway," which links Kyoto to Koyasan.
The money exchange, "Gin-ya" was essential to a city like Furuichi, which was very prosperous as a traffic and commercial center. The grand appearance of the Gin-ya mansion shows the atmosphere of prosperity in those days. The unusual board fence, called Funaitabei, on the south wall of the mansion are abandoned material from the Kensakibune boats of the Ishikawa River, evidence of the ingenuity of the merchants.
