Shiratori Shrine

Edo Period
Festival of Floats (danjiri matsuri)

This shrine was originally established in Ikidani, in the north part of the Karusato district, with the name of "Ikinomiya." It declined during the wars of the Period of the Northern and Southern Courts (1337-1392) and Warring Period (1467-1568) and was finally devastated by the great earthquake in 1596.
The shrine was moved to the current location at the end of the Kan-ei period of the Edo Period (1600-1868). Dedicated to legendary prince Yamatotakeru no mikoto and god Susanoo no mikoto, it became the guardian shrine of the Furuichi area. In the autumn festival on Oct. 8 and 9, festival floats from every part of Furuichi participate in a spectacular parade to the shrine.
