Furuichi Tomb Cluster

Kofun Period
Cluster of Mausoleums of Emperors
The Ojin Mausoleum is the largest in Japan.

The Furuichi tomb cluster, which has many of the largest tumuli in Japan, was constructed during the 150 year period from the end of the 4th century to the early 6th century. This cluster is mainly located in Habikino City and Fujiidera City, in the southeast part of Osaka Prefecture. It consists of more than 100 tumuli, from very small tumuli whose length is less than 10 m to the large scale keyhole-shaped mausoleums of Emperors, including the Emperor Ojin Mausoleum which is the largest in Japan.
All of the tumuli are located at heights of more than 24 m. Engineers who were immigrants from the Asian continent were believed to have been involved in construction of the tomb mounds.
