Chikamatsu Park

Modern Times
(including the Edo Period)

The construction of this park was started in 1979 and completed in 1985 in remembrance of Chikamatsu Monzaemon, a master writer in the Edo Period (1600- 1868). The park takes the form of a Japanese landscape garden in the go-round style. It is located near Kosai-ji Temple in which lies his tomb. His tomb was designated as a national historic spot in September 1966.

With a fall, a pond, streams, a spacious lawn lot, and a rest house, people can enjoy walking and viewing various flower blossoms. Welcoming the visitor is a 1-m tall bronze seated statue depicting Chikamatsu in his prime of life, in his fifties, wearing a haori and a hakama. This statue is the work of sculptor Heijin Murakami.
